These are white fillings.

White fillings are made of a very strong material called composite. Composite can be matched in shade to that of the tooth it is restoring.

White fillings can be put in as the first restoration a tooth has or sometimes a patient may wish their amalgam (metal) fillings changed to composite.

Unless a patient has an allergy to metal it is usually best to wait until an amalgam filling needs to be replaced before changing to white fillings.

Composite is very durable but is not quite as load resistant as amalgam, so it would not usually be used in situations where there is excessive load on a tooth. In these cases a crown or inlay would be used instead.

White fillings are always used on front teeth and are usually the filling of choice where it will be visible when smiling.
